A little bit about myself
I am a qualified Chartered Tax Adviser with 30 year's experience in taxation; I started my career in the HM Revenue & Customs prior to moving into private practice. I have significant experience working in both medium-sized and smaller general practices, gaining valuable all round experience in a wide variety of clients and businesses. I joined Hill & Company (when it was still known as Cooke, Overton & Salt) in 1994 as their Tax Manager and following the sudden death of Ian Hill in 2001, took over the running of the business.
The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) and the Association of Taxation Technicians (ATT) are the leading professional bodies in the United Kingdom concerned solely with taxation. I fully qualified for membership in 1994 and have been a practicing member continually since then.
As well as running my business and delivering all the work for my client, I love to get involved with the bodies and associations that are important to me and my business.
I sit on a national technical committee for the CIOT and ATT, covering ‘working together’, an initiative rolled out nationally to give agents and HMRC the opportunity to regularly meet and discuss best practice and solve practical problems. With all the changes that have and will be taking place in terms of digital engagement, there is certainly plenty to talk about on at the moment!
I have been a volunteer for the FSB (Federation of Small Businesses) at a senior level for around twelve years (including serving as the regional director for Staffordshire and the West Midlands for 8 years). I continue to be passionate about helping small businesses by offering support and advice and by actively lobbying on issues that affect us.
With the changes in law which allows Accountants to become regulated in probate work, Hill Lillis is expanding into new areas.
Having returned to the classroom and an examination hall for the first time in some years, I was delighted to have passed the Probate and Estate Administration course and I am excited to be heading the first accountancy practice in Sutton Coldfield, to be authorised to undertake this specialised work.
There are so many opportunities and challenges that are facing us and the business community in the coming months and years.
The tax and accounting world is changing; digital is the way forward and the way businesses and taxpayers are used to filing annual returns and paper documents is being turned on its head. Hill Lillis will lead our clients through the confusion, making sure there is clarity and understanding of the options and implications.
What else do I personally want for Hill Lillis & Company for the future? I want us to become known by businesses, our community and our staff as The Practice to go for advice, for good service, support during difficult times and to be the best place to work.
Hearing from you!
